Schematic model of lactate kinetics between myeloma cells and bone marrow stromal cells. Lactate is produced by both myeloma cells and bone marrow stromal cells, suggesting that it acts as an autocrine and paracrine energy source. MCT1 may play an important role as a gate for incoming lactate. Targeting of MCT1 may result in decreased incorporation of lactate, resulting in cell death.
